Which Apprenticeship to Choose
Which Apprenticeship and choice of NVQ is right for an individual will depend on their experience and the role being undertaken. The ranges of Level 2 NVQs available in the framework cover career pathways in horticulture, production horticulture, and parks gardens and green space. Progression onto an Advanced Apprenticeship at Level 3 allows access to higher level. Training and work link to a supervisory role.
Assessment Information
There are three strands to the programme, which are outlined below:
Knowledge and Understanding
Providing the relevant knowledge and understanding required to be able to develop the skills needed. It will also provide an opportunity to undertake qualifications and training that will aid progression to further learning opportunities such as Foundation Degrees and indeed full degree programmes.
Within this element there is also a mandatory requirement for apprentices to achieve a qualification designed to ensure they can demonstrate awareness of their employer and the industry as a whole. Here, knowledge will be developed in areas such as hours of work, rates of pay, annual leave entitlement and employment rights and responsibilities.
Assessment is achieved through a range of assignments and projects linked to the unit topics. Assignments will be closely aligned to work practice and will extend and underpin the role at work.
Occupational Competence (On the Job)
This strand provides the opportunity for the technical knowledge to be applied to a real life setting and for on-going evaluation to be made of the progress of an individual to develop within their area of expertise. Each occupational pathway within the sector is covered in this component by an NVQ – examples of which are horticulture, production horticulture, and park gardens and green space.
Candidates will be assessed using a range of methods including observation of work based practical tasks that will allow demonstration of competence against nationally recognised standards. Evidence will be generated through daily work activities and collated using an electronic portfolio system. Tutors will work closely with candidates to prepare for formal assessments, which are included in each unit. This will be ‘ongoing ‘as candidate’s progress through the programme.
Functional Skills (English & Maths)
These are key components that assist development of core skills to enable candidates to fulfil their role in the organisation. Assessments are planned around the individual and preparation work is designed to complement work activities.
In addition, candidates will also undertake a First aid certificate as part of the programme.
This is a specialist qualification which will include both practical and written assessment following a full training programme to equip candidates with legislative competency. Depending on business / employer need this could be an alternative qualification linked to the employee's role.
