Plumbing (Intermediate)

What's On The Course?

The Apprenticeship is a programme of vocational education and training whereby you will develop your skills, whilst learning on the job, building up your knowledge and experience, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time.

As an Apprentice, you will learn how to:

  • Work safely in a plumbing environment.
  • Learn about PPE, HASAWA 1974, COSHH, Manual Handling and hazards at work.
  • Work effectively with supervisors, visitors and others and developing yourself.
  • Interpret construction drawings, manuals, charts and books.
  • Understand materials used in industry, and understand why we use them. Identify these materials.
  • Build on work based experience to gain recognised industry related qualifications.
  • Gain a working understanding of central heating, hot & cold water supply and sanitation systems with the underpinning scientific knowledge.

The programme is made up of 13 mandatory units incorporating theory, practical and a final on-line exam.

For this NVQ qualification, you will develop a Portfolio of Evidence while demonstrating the practical skills of the job. Your work is continually assessed and new Action Plans are issued identifying what is required next.

You will also undertake essential skills (at an appropriate level), in Numeracy and Communication, together with an external Health and Safety exam and a Technical Certificate in Basic Plumbing Skills.


How Long Does It Take?

The Apprenticeship will last for approximately 24 months, with 1 day a week in college and 4 days with your employer.


When Does It Start?

The Apprenticeship starts in September.


Who Is It Suitable For?

Anyone who wants to work in the plumbing sector.


What Are The Entry Requirements?

  • 4 GCSE’s at grade D or 3 GCSE’s at grade D plus either Literacy or Numeracy Basic Skills Assessment at Level 1.
  • Good attitude to learning.
  • Enthusiasm for the occupational area.
  • Willingness to achieve your goals.
  • Minimum age of 16 years.
  • Employment in a plumbing environment.


What Can I Do Next?

Progression onto a higher level NVQ Course, promotion within the workplace or further career options in plumbing.


How Much Does It Cost?

Apprenticeships are Government funded. However you will be expected to provide basic stationery items, i.e. folder/plastic wallets for storing your NVQ evidence.


Where Does It Take Place?

Depending on your individual needs, the majority of your programme is spent undertaking work with your employer. Agreed off the job training at College will be discussed with you to suit your training programme.
