What's On The Course?

The Apprenticeship is a programme of vocational education and training whereby you will learn on the job, building up knowledge and skills, gaining qualifications and earning money all at the same time.

The programme consists of 7 units, 6 mandatory units and 1 optional unit. Your competence will be assessed in the following areas:

  • Working with children to promote aspects of development.
  • Maintaining a safe environment.
  • Supporting children’s play.
  • Contributing to positive relationships providing physical care for children.

For this NVQ qualification, you will develop a Portfolio of Evidence while demonstrating the practical skills of the job. Your work is continually assessed and new Action Plans are issued identifying future targets.

You will also undertake essential skills (at an appropriate level) in Numeracy and Communication, together with a Technical Certificate.


How Long Does It Take?

The course is held over a 12-18 month period.


When Does It Start?

The Apprenticeship can start at any time.


Who Is It Suitable For?

It is suitable for students who wish to work with children aged 0-16 years of age, in a variety of settings outside the classroom (in addition to nursery and reception).


What Are The Entry Requirements?

The entry requirements are based on a satisfactory police check, good references, an ability to work and research independently combined with a confident attitude towards the care and education of the child.


What Can I Do Next?

Progress into employment, working under the supervision of senior members of staff or further education onto a Level 3 qualification.


How Much Does It Cost?

Apprenticeships are Government funded. However you will be expected to provide basic stationery items, i.e. folder/plastic wallets for storing your NVQ evidence.


Where Does It Take Place?

The Apprenticeship will be completed one day per week in college and in the workplace for 4 days per week.
