Hairdressing Diploma Level 3 VRQ

What’s on the Course?

You will learn about and expand your existing knowledge on:

-Colour techniques
-Cutting techniques
-Style and dress long hair
-Hair Extensions
-Consultation


How long does it take?

You can do this course either Full or Part Time.

You will need to attend college 1 or 2 days per week for up to 36 weeks including one evening. You also need to spend time each week in industry.


Who is it suitable for?

hairdresser who wants to further their career and has completed a level 2 qualification or equivalent.


What are the entry requirements?

The entry requirements for this course include:

- Level 2 hairdressing or equivalent qualification
- Currently working in the industry
- Ability to work independently
- Subject to interview/skills test


What can I do next?

After successfully completing this qualification you will be able to enhance your career prospects in a wide range of salons or advance onto a teaching qualification. You could also progress onto Level 4 qualifications or foundation degree in salon management.


How much does it cost?

Tuition fees still to be confirmed, City & Guilds registration and certificate approximately £100, you will also need to provide your own personal tools.

Foundation Degree in Salon Management

What’s on the Course?
The course consists of twelve modules which are:
Managing self development –Evaluation of own professional needs – technical skills, study skills, personal and interpersonal skills.

Managing finance – Fundamentals of finance in salon operations – VAST, budget control, cash flow predictions etc

Research informed salon operations – Develop skills to be able to identify useful sources of information when planning / evaluating business operations; how to analyse data relating to business; how to find out what customers want and think about the business

Human resources and human relations – Recruitment and selection processes, equal ops legislation, staff performance review, managing staff, disciplinary, firing etc within employment law

Employability skills 1 – Critical evaluation of the industry

Work based project 1 – Opportunityto put into practice what has been learned in other modules. Chance to identify and solve a business problem; to introduce new ways of working, to manage and evaluate changes

Managing marketing – Principles of marketing within the industry, developing marketing strategy and planning.

Managing people - Management and leadership skills; reflecting on own approach; managing and building teams; managing and motivating individuals and teams

Ethical and legal salon operations – Roles and responsibilities within salon operations; professional competency; individual and collective responsibility; consumer law; health and safety

Development through innovation and creativity - an evaluation of contemporary developments and innovative techniques, treatments and technologies. To develop a competitive edge in the industry

Employability skills 2 - This is a follow up from Employability skills 1


Work based project 2 – This is a follow on from Work based project 1

Teaching & Learning in Higher Education
Modules will be delivered in a variety of ways suited to higher level study. Methods will include lectures, seminars, workshops, tutorials and independent research.
Learning at level 4 and above is very focused on independent study, and students will be expected to take responsibility for their own learning.

What are the entry requirements?
Applicants will normally have a level 3 vocational qualification in a relevant subject area. You will also have literacy and numeracy skills to enable you to fully engage with higher level learning.

As this degree is relevant for people who are already in employment, your relevant experience and aptitude for higher level learning will be considered too.

All applicants will be asked to attend an interview.

How will I be assessed?
Assessment may include a variety of formal and informal techniques via a combination of work-based learning and other more traditional means of assessment such as;

— Practical tasks - to include observation and reflection of current working practice.
— Research assignment – to improve or develop specialist practice in your vocational area.
— Business Report – this might be based on a review of desk and field research as well as academic literature
— Projects – this will be a combination of individual and team based work
— Essays – this will cover academic understanding, analysis and evaluation
— Oral Presentations – this will be delivered as an individual or as part of a small team to other members of your peer group
— Reflective Log – this is an ongoing reflective account of both your personal and academic progress.

Who is it suitable for?
The course is suitable for people already in the industry, but is also available to people wanting to move into salon management, potential students do not necessarily have to have a hair or beauty background.

What can I do next?
Successful completion of this foundation degree will entitle you to apply for a top up course to the BA (Hons) degree in management with the University of Cumbria.

How long does it take?
Three years part-time.

Hairdressing Diploma Level 2 VRQ

What’s on the Course?

You will gain knowledge and practical skills relating to:

-Health and Safety
-Shampoo Consultation
-Cutting and Styling
-Perming and Colouring
-Reception

You will develop the ability to work as a team member and broaden your essential skills i.e. English Maths and ICT

Assessment information:

You will be assessed both in college and in the work place.

How Long Does it Take?

This course lasts 34 weeks (12 months), you can do this course either full or part time, which includes one evening. You will also be required to spend 1 day per week in industry.

Who is it Suitable For?

Anyone who is committed to hairdressing, but is not yet ready for employment.

-Interview with one of the hairdressing team
-4 GCSE grade A-D
-Keen interest in hairdressing
-Ability to work in busy environment
-Good timekeeping
-Happy enthusiastic personality
-Communication skills

What Can I Do Next?

After successfully completing Diploma Level 2 VRQ , you can work in the hairdressing industry. You could also transfer your skills to Diploma Level 2 NVQ. You can eventually progress onto Diploma Level 3 VRQ or NVQ Level which can lead to a career in teaching, senior stylist, manufacturer or technician.

Choose to follow either the Beauty or Hairdressing route and explore a variety of services offered in either industry

Assessment information The emphasis is on ‘learning by doing’ not on competence. For this reason, candidates are required to complete a number of assignments to show their attainment of practical skills and underpinning knowledge. Each assignment is divided into a series of tasks. To achieve each unit, candidates need to achieve all tasks. Learners will also be observed on a variety of Hairdressing or Beauty services.

Up to 36 weeks

Who is it suitable for?
This qualification is intended for learners who wish to explore their interest in the Hair or Beauty sector. It will help them gain an insight about the industry; learn useful basic skills and relevant background knowledge

What are the entry requirements?
A keen interest in the Hair or Beauty Industry and good communication skills.

What can I do next?
Diploma2 (VRQ) in Hairdressing or Level 2 Diploma in Beauty Therapy

How much does it cost?
Please contact Lakes College for advice on fees. Students may be eligible for remission from fees depending upon personal circumstances you will also need to purchase a kit & tunic approximately £150. In addition you will be expected to wear black trousers/skirt and small-heeled black shoes.
