What’s on the Course?
This is a TWO year course. In the first year you will study;
— Communicating in Health and Social Care Organisations
— Principles of Health and Social Care Practice
— Health and Safety in the Health and Social Care Workplace
— Personal and Professional Development in Health and Social Care.
— Working in Partnership in Health and Social Care
— Social Policy
— Empowering users of Health and Social Care Services
— Safeguarding in Health and Social Care.
In the second year, students study:
Understanding Specific Needs in Health and Social Care
Contemporary Issues in Health and Social Care
Supporting Independent Living
Influences on Health and Social Care Organisations
Managing Quality in Health and Social Care
Work-based Experience
Health Promotion
In addition to this there is a Research Project that will start at the end of year one and continue into year 2, allowing you to utilise the break over summer to collect your research data.
When does it start?
September
What are the entry requirements?
Good A levels or equivalent Level 3 qualification, and at least 200 hours per year in an appropriate work placement.
How will I be assessed?
Assessment methods vary and will include:
— Formal Examinations (which may include seen and unseen, open and closed book)
— Practical work based on work placement.
— Course work
— Oral Presentations (including seminars)
— Reflective and evaluative career planning
— Portfolio production
— Reports and documentation of work based activities and career planning
— Work based project where practical work is evaluated both by the student and supervisor
Teaching and Learning in Higher Education
Modules will be delivered in a variety of ways suited to higher level study. Methods will include:
— lectures
— seminars
— workshops
— tutorials
— independent research
Learning at level 4 and above is very focused on independent study, and students will be expected to take responsibility for their own learning.
What are the entry requirements?
Good A levels or equivalent Level 3 qualification, and at least 200 hours per year in an appropriate work placement.
What can I do next?
Employment of further study, such as top up year to full degree.
How long does it take?
The full time foundation degree programme usually takes two years to complete.
When does it start?
September every year. For specific start dates please contact Student Services.
Who is it suitable for?
All suitable applicants will be interviewed.

Fees may vary according to qualification and route you do. Student loans and bursaries are available for many students to access.

Level 3 Diploma in Health & Social Care
What’s on the Course?
This course will give you the skills, knowledge and understanding of the health and social care sector, care settings, job roles, principles and values involved.
Functional skills in communication, application of number and IT are an integral part of the course.
A work experience placement, in a care setting, will take place over three x one week blocks. As you will be working with vulnerable people, a full criminal background (CRB) check is required.

How long does it take?
Two years, full time to achieve the Level 3 Extended Diploma in Health and Social Care.
Who is it suitable for?
Anyone who wishes to enter a professional career in care such as nursing or social work training.
It also provides you with qualifications to enter other care related degree programmes too.
What are the entry requirements?
Successfully completed at least four GCSEs at grade A* - C (to include English at grade C or level 2 Literacy qualification) or an equivalent Level 2 qualification.
Applicants should have a caring nature and a willingness to attend regularly, work hard and show a commitment to their studies.
What can I do next?
When you have successfully completed this course you may be able to progress to:
— Higher education
— Degree programme (including Foundation Degree in Intergrated Education and Care of Children and Young People)
— Employment

Level 2 Diploma in Health & Social Care
What’s on the Course?
This course prepares you to give quality care and studies practical care and skills. It includes communicating with service users in the care sector; it also covers topics such as hygiene and safety in care settings.
Throughout the course you will be developing your skills in numeracy, literacy and IT.
A work experience placement, in a care setting, will take place three x one week blocks.
As you will be working with vunerable people, a full criminal background (CRB) check is required.

How long does it take?
One year, full time.
Who is it suitable for?
Anyone who needs the skills and experience to enter employment in the care sector.
It also provides you with the qualifications to enter a Level 3 course as it is equivalent to four GCSEs grades A - C.
What are the entry requirements?
Successfully completed GCSEs at grade D or hold an equivalent Level 1 qualification.
Applicants should have a caring nature and a willingness to attend regularly, work hard and show a commitment to their studies.
What can I do next?
When you have successfully completed this course you may be able to progress to:
— BTEC Level 3 National certificate in Health & Social Care

Level 1 Diploma in Health & Social Care
What’s on the Course?
This course is about the skills, knowledge and understanding required to prepare for work in the health and social care sector.
It will help you develop your skills in team working, career planning and communication.
Throughout the course you will be developing your skills in numeracy, literacy and IT.
There are eight units of study all of which are course work assessed, there are no exams.
As you will be working with vunerable people, a criminal background (CRB) check is required.

September
How long does it take?
One year, full time.
Who is it suitable for?
Anyone interested in gaining a broad foundation qualification in understanding about caring for people.
What are the entry requirements?
Applicants should have successfully completed GCSEs at grade F or hold an Entry 3 qualification.
Applicants should have a caring nature and a willingness to attend regularly and show a commitment to their studies.
What can I do next?
When you have successfully completed this course you may be able to progress to:
— Level 2 BTEC Dipolma in Health and Social Care
— BTEC in Childrens Care, Learning and Development, possibly including an NVQ in Social Care
— Training as a healthcare assistant
