Entry Level 1 Diploma in Independent Living

What’s on the Course?
This qualification is ideal for people wanting to gain knowledge and skills in cooking and independent living.
Time will be spent in practical and theory classes on an arrangement of activities that will enhance independence. You will be expected to undertake development of essential skills while studying on this course. This will cover, at an appropriate level, Functional Skills – literacy, numeracy or ICT.

Who is it suitable for?
This course is a NOCN course and is aimed at people that may need to improve skills and knowledge with independence concentrating on food, equipment and cooking. By the end of the course you will be able to prepare and cook a variety of simple dishes and receive an Entry 1 Diploma in Independent Living.

What are the entry requirements?
Basic communication skills, but you do not need any cooking experience.

Level 3 Diploma in Professional Cookery

What’s on the Course?
This course will be full-time for 18 months two days a week over days and evenings.
This course is specifically designed forthose wishing to improve their cooking skills to the level of Chef, Sous Chef or Pâtissier, covering more specialist ingredients and methods, including making pastry based dishes.

Food preparation and cookery including restaurant production
Practical work at this level concentrates on producing and serving a wide range of individual dishes, preparations and styles. Time will be spent in practical classes, practical cookery, restaurant production and restaurant service. The restaurant classes will be producing and serving meals to the general public in the colleges ‘La Rue’ restaurant.
The Hospitality and Catering Industry is constantly looking for part-time staff and almost all students are able to secure paid part-time work in kitchens and dining rooms while attending college.

‘You are expected to undertake development of essential skills while studying on this course. This will cover, at an appropriate level, communication, application of number and information technology.
A tutorial enrichment programme is available to help you to get the most out of your course. Regular attendance at these sessions has proved invaluable to past students’.

Attendance is full time for 34 weeks. Study will be mainly daytime with some evenings.

Who is it suitable for?
Those wishing to achieve a job within the catering industry.

What are the entry requirements?
Successful completion of diploma Level 2 in Food and Drink Service and/or Food Preparation and Cooking. Previous experience in the hospitality and catering industry at an appropriate level.

What can I do next?
Employment at chef level or progressionon to the foundation degree in Hospitality Excellence, currently run in Kendal.
