Level 3 Diploma in Public Services

What’s on the Course?
Students will follow a programme of study which is both practical & theoretical. Students must complete 12 units, 5 of which are mandatory.

Core Units
— Government polices and the public services
— Team leadership on the uniformed public services
— Citizenship contemporary society and the public services
— Team development in public services
— Understanding discipline within the uniformed services

Students will follow 7 additional units from:
— Diversity and public services
— Physical preparation
— Understanding the criminal justice system and police powers
— Understanding behaviour in the public sector
— Team development in public services
— Physical preparation and fitness for the uniformed services
— International perspectives for the uniformed public services
— Outdoor and adventurous expeditions
— Crime and its effect on society
— The planning for and the management of major incidents
— Uniformed public service employment

When does it start?
September

How long does it take?
Two years full-time 36 weeks per year.

Who is it suitable for?
Anyone wanting to pursue a career in uniformed public services or wanting to enter higher education.

What are the entry requirements?
— To be able to work independently and in groups
— Four GCSE’s grade C or above, including english language
— Level 2 award, e.g. first diploma or intermediate GNVQ in relevant subject

What can I do next?
When you have successfully completed the course you may be able to progress to:
— Higher education, studying for a degree or high national diploma
— Application from employment within public services

How much does it cost?
Full time students under 19 - free.

Level 2 Diploma in Public Services

What’s on the Course?

Students will follow a programme of study, which is both practical and theoretical. Students must complete six units three of which are mandatory Core Units

— Unit 1 Public Service Employment Provides students with an insight into the range of work undertaken by the public services. It examines different career opportunities and promotion opportunities. It also examines the applications and selection processes for a range of public services and seeks to help students to develop the skills necessary to be successful during application and selection phases

— Unit 2 Public Service Skills. A practical and theoretical unit designed to develop a range of teamwork, communication and interpersonal skills essential for working in the public services

— Unit 3 Public Service Fitness A practical and theoretical unit which seeks to develop a students understanding of fitness and the body. The unit is very practical and includes the development of personal fitness programmes and public service fitness tests and regimes *This unit is likely to include input from the armed services, for example a visit to the police HQ to carry out the police fitness test.

Students will follow three additional units from:

— Citizenship, the Individual and Society

— Public service workplace welfare

— Adventurous activities and teamwork for the public services

— The value of sport and recreation in the public services

— Land navigation by map and compass

— Law and its impact on the individual

— Crime and its effects on society

— Community and cultural awareness

— Driving and its relationship to the public services

How long does it take?
Two years full-time.

Who is it suitable for?
Anyone wanting to pursue a career in uniformed public services or wanting to the National Public Services course.

What are the entry requirements?

— A minimum of four GCSEs grade D or above

What can I do next?
Successful students can progress onto the BTEC National Diploma in Public Services course, or other equivalent courses within the college (or other institutions). Students could also progress directly into employment, i.e. uniformed services.
