Assessment Information
There are three strands to the programme, which are outlined below:
Technical Development (Knowledge)
Providing the relevant knowledge and understanding required to be able to develop the skills needed to coach and lead activities. It will also provide an opportunity to undertake qualifications and training that will aid progression to further learning opportunities such as Foundation Degrees and indeed full degree programmes.
Technical certificates test occupational knowledge directed at off the job rather than on the job training.
Within this technical element there is also a mandatory requirement for apprentices to achieve a qualification designed to ensure they can demonstrate awareness of their employer and the industry as a whole. Here, knowledge will be developed in areas such as hours of work, rates of pay, annual leave entitlement and employment rights and responsibilities.
Assessment is achieved through a range of assignments and projects linked to the unit topics. Assignments will be closely aligned to work practice and will extend and underpin the role at work.
Occupational Competence (On the Job)
This strand provides the opportunity for the technical knowledge to be applied to a real life setting and for on-going evaluation to be made of the progress of an individual to develop within their area of expertise or across a range of sports. Each occupational pathway within the sector is covered in this component by an NVQ – examples of which are in the context of ‘Instructing Exercise and Fitness’, ‘Sports Development’, ‘Playwork’, ‘Operational Services’, ‘Coaching, Teaching & Instructing’, and ‘Outdoor Programmes’.
Candidates will be assessed using a range of methods including observation of work based practical tasks that will allow demonstration of competence against nationally recognised standards. Evidence will be generated through daily work activities and collated using an electronic portfolio system. Tutors will work closely with candidates to prepare for formal assessments, which are included in each unit. This will be ongoing as candidate’s progress through the programme.
Functional Skills (English & Maths)
These are key components that assist development of core skills to enable candidates to fulfil their role in the organisation. Assessments are planned around the individual and preparation work is designed to complement work activities.
In addition, candidates will also undertake a First aid certificate as part of the programme.
This is a specialist qualification which will include both practical and written assessment following a full training programme to equip candidates with legislative competency.
Depending on business / employer need this could be an alternative qualification linked to the employee's role.
How Long Does It Take?
There is no time set to complete an Apprenticeship but they will usually take between 12 (Level 2 Intermediate Apprenticeship) and 24 months (Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship).
When Does It Start?
The college will be commencing delivery of this suite of programmes from March 2011 – from there roll on roll off starts will be available to meet with employer requirements.
Who Is It Suitable For?
Candidates will ideally work in the Sports and Leisure industry and wish to gain a range of valuable qualifications that will finally result in a recognised apprenticeship.
What Are The Entry Requirements?
There are no formal entry requirements as a full initial assessment will be carried out for each prospective candidate.
