Level 2 Diploma in Music

What is this course?

This is a 1 year full time course aimed at people who have an interest in the music industry, musical performance and composing. 

This course is made up of three mandatory units:

Unit 1: Working in the Music Industry

Unit 2: Professional Development in the Music Industry

Unit 3: Planning and Creating a Musical Product

And four optional units, which could include:

Unit 4: Solo Musical Performance

Unit 5: Exploring Musical Composition

Unit 6: Working as a Musical Ensemble

Unit 10: Developing as a Musical Performer

Unit 12: The Development of Music

Unit 16: Investigating and area of music

You will also be taught in one functional skill area of English, Maths or ICT and have a chance to study in other subjects.

What are the Entry requirements?

Proven practical experience and musical competency will be assessed on an individual basis. You will be required to prepare a short performance/audition for your interview. You will need access to your own musical instrument for practical/rehearsal sessions.
Four GCSEs at grades D to E to include English. Student Services staff can help you
with any aspect of the entry requirements.  

How is the course assessed?

The Level 2 Diploma in Music is continually assessed throughout the year by practical assignments, musical performance and a portfolio of work covering each specific unit. Functional skills in English has practical assessments and a test; Functional Skills Maths and ICT both have a test.

When does it start

The course starts with an induction week in September, and then runs throughout the year until July. You will study for three days a week at the Lillyhall campus.

Progression opportunities

As this is equivalent to four GCSEs at C and above you may be able to progress to:

Further qualifications in Music and Music Technology at a range of institutions, progress to other Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications and increase your prospects for employment opportunities within this sector.

What is this course?

This is a 1-year full time course aimed at people who have an interest in Photography. You may be either considering a career directly in this industry or something that is linked to it, for example travel, media or the hospitality industry.

Success leads to

  • L1 Award in Photography
  • L2 Award in Photography
  • L2 Award in Customer Service (Hospitality, Leisure and Travel and Tourism)
  • L2 Certificate in Developing Enterprise Skills
  • World-wide Travel Destinations  (for Photography).

There is also an additional qualifications in Event Planning in Report Reps/ Cabin Crew which can be studied instead of the L2 Photography. The course will involve trips, visits and projects and all students will follow a course in Personal and Social Development and Functional Skills in English and maths. Learning is engaging, interactive and applied to the world of Photography.

Students will be taught by a professional photographer and have access to a modern studio and links to the photography/travel industry.

What are the Entry requirements?
You should have at least 5 GCSEs at grades D to G including English D or above, or a BTEC level 1 Diploma in subject and GCSE English at D or above. You should have an interest in photography, working with people and customer service; have good communication and keyboarding skills, and an interest in the travel as you will be on location at times in the UK and possibly abroad. In certain circumstances, you may have significant work experience or pass the induction process, which may cover some or all of the formal entry requirements. Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture

What’s on the Course?
Two days will be spent studying essential Horticultural techniques at Distington Walled Garden. an amenity/production working environment The course units will include ground preparation, crop establishment, management skills, ground maintenance and harvesting 

Monday and Thursday will be based  at the Walled Garden for Horticulture studies and Friday afternoon will be at the college campus working towards functional skills.

How long does it take?
One year.

Who is it suitable for?
The course is suitable for students with an interest in Horticulture, who are currently working at Level 1. It is ideal for those who both enjoy practical tasks and are looking to improve their background knowledge of Horticulture.

What are the entry requirements?
Applicants should be working at Level1 and should be capable of the physical demands of Horticulture at this higher level. 

What can I do next?
When you have successfully completed this Level 2 Diploma there is possible progression onto further courses, or dependent on ability , into employment.

Entry Level 1 Diploma in Independent Living

What’s on the Course?
This qualification is ideal for people wanting to gain knowledge and skills in cooking and independent living.
Time will be spent in practical and theory classes on an arrangement of activities that will enhance independence. You will be expected to undertake development of essential skills while studying on this course. This will cover, at an appropriate level, Functional Skills – literacy, numeracy or ICT.

36 weeks

Who is it suitable for?
This course is a NOCN course and is aimed at people that may need to improve skills and knowledge with independence concentrating on food, equipment and cooking. By the end of the course you will be able to prepare and cook a variety of simple dishes and receive an Entry 1 Diploma in Independent Living.

What are the entry requirements?
Basic communication skills, but you do not need any cooking experience.

Level 2 Rugby Performance Development

What’s on the Course?

ACADEMIC & VOCATIONAL CONTENT
The course is made up of a main course (the BTEC level 2 course) and then a number of additional qualifications, these include – 1st 4 Sport Coaching qualification and Functional Skills in Maths, English or IT.

RUGBY LEAGUE SPECIFIC CONTENT
Students will receive rugby league specific qualifications which include RFL level 1 Coaching Qualification and the RFL Match Officials Qualification.
In addition to these qualifications the players who enrol on this course will receive 2 hours per week Strength & Conditioning coaching and 4 hours per week of Rugby League specific coaching that will be delivered by RFL community coaches with guest coaches from local professional clubs.
Players who are on the course will gain competitive experience in the Student Rugby League North West League (under 19’s); fixtures will be played on Wednesday afternoons between September and February.

As part of the course students will be required to work in local community clubs for a minimum of 20 hours over the year, either coaching youth teams or officiating games.

This course gives potential student rugby league players the opportunity to play in a competitive league within their own age group; study for a sports related qualification and receive quality Rugby League and conditioning coaching on a weekly basis.

Assessment information
The assessment on the course varies depending on the unit of study. Assessment methods include – exams, essays, lab reports, journal reviews, practical assessment, recorded discussions, observations etc. However, the majority of the assessment will be of a practical nature and based around Rugby League.
The grading on the course is split into 3 key criteria – PASS, MERIT & DISTINCTION.

The progression routes from this course include:
• Further study on the second year of the course, studying a level 3 (3 A-level equivalent) qualification
• Further study at foundation degree level either at Lakes College or another Higher Education institute
• Undertaking of industry recognised qualifications in areas such as gym instruction
• Employment in the industry in a role such as a Leisure Assistant in a sports centre.
• Completion of a UK Coaching Certificate
• Accreditation to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)
• Playing progression into the West Cumbria Under 18’s squad

Level 2 Football Performance Development

What’s on the Course?

You will also be working towards achieving either an Edexcel BTEC Award, Certificate or Diploma in Work Skills at Entry Level 3 or Level 1.
