Level 2 Diploma in Music

What is this course?

This is a 1 year full time course aimed at people who have an interest in the music industry, musical performance and composing. 

This course is made up of three mandatory units:

Unit 1: Working in the Music Industry

Unit 2: Professional Development in the Music Industry

Unit 3: Planning and Creating a Musical Product

And four optional units, which could include:

Unit 4: Solo Musical Performance

Unit 5: Exploring Musical Composition

Unit 6: Working as a Musical Ensemble

Unit 10: Developing as a Musical Performer

Unit 12: The Development of Music

Unit 16: Investigating and area of music

You will also be taught in one functional skill area of English, Maths or ICT and have a chance to study in other subjects.

What are the Entry requirements?

Proven practical experience and musical competency will be assessed on an individual basis. You will be required to prepare a short performance/audition for your interview. You will need access to your own musical instrument for practical/rehearsal sessions.
Four GCSEs at grades D to E to include English. Student Services staff can help you
with any aspect of the entry requirements.  

How is the course assessed?

The Level 2 Diploma in Music is continually assessed throughout the year by practical assignments, musical performance and a portfolio of work covering each specific unit. Functional skills in English has practical assessments and a test; Functional Skills Maths and ICT both have a test.

When does it start

The course starts with an induction week in September, and then runs throughout the year until July. You will study for three days a week at the Lillyhall campus.

As this is equivalent to four GCSEs at C and above you may be able to progress to:

Further qualifications in Music and Music Technology at a range of institutions, progress to other Level 2 or Level 3 qualifications and increase your prospects for employment opportunities within this sector.

What support is available to me?

If you are on benefits or have a low income then there are various funds which may be available to you. This may be support with bursaries for students aged 16-18, or support with the costs of joining and coming to College if you an adult. Our team also has extensive knowledge of national schemes which you may be eligible for. If you are interested in securing a place on this course you will need to complete and submit an application form. Following this you will be invited to attend an information event at the college and have a personal interview with a member of the teaching team where you can discuss the course, studying at the college, and your suitability.
