Level 2 Diploma in Work-based Horticulture

What’s on the Course?
Two days will be spent studying essential Horticultural techniques at Distington Walled Garden. an amenity/production working environment The course units will include ground preparation, crop establishment, management skills, ground maintenance and harvesting 

Monday and Thursday will be based  at the Walled Garden for Horticulture studies and Friday afternoon will be at the college campus working towards functional skills.

How long does it take?
One year.

Who is it suitable for?
The course is suitable for students with an interest in Horticulture, who are currently working at Level 1. It is ideal for those who both enjoy practical tasks and are looking to improve their background knowledge of Horticulture.

What are the entry requirements?
Applicants should be working at Level1 and should be capable of the physical demands of Horticulture at this higher level. 

What can I do next?

Level 2 Rugby Performance Development

What’s on the Course?

ACADEMIC & VOCATIONAL CONTENT
The course is made up of a main course (the BTEC level 2 course) and then a number of additional qualifications, these include – 1st 4 Sport Coaching qualification and Functional Skills in Maths, English or IT.

RUGBY LEAGUE SPECIFIC CONTENT
Students will receive rugby league specific qualifications which include RFL level 1 Coaching Qualification and the RFL Match Officials Qualification.
In addition to these qualifications the players who enrol on this course will receive 2 hours per week Strength & Conditioning coaching and 4 hours per week of Rugby League specific coaching that will be delivered by RFL community coaches with guest coaches from local professional clubs.
Players who are on the course will gain competitive experience in the Student Rugby League North West League (under 19’s); fixtures will be played on Wednesday afternoons between September and February.

As part of the course students will be required to work in local community clubs for a minimum of 20 hours over the year, either coaching youth teams or officiating games.

This course gives potential student rugby league players the opportunity to play in a competitive league within their own age group; study for a sports related qualification and receive quality Rugby League and conditioning coaching on a weekly basis.

Assessment information
The assessment on the course varies depending on the unit of study. Assessment methods include – exams, essays, lab reports, journal reviews, practical assessment, recorded discussions, observations etc. However, the majority of the assessment will be of a practical nature and based around Rugby League.
The grading on the course is split into 3 key criteria – PASS, MERIT & DISTINCTION.

Who is it suitable for?
If you wish to play competitive Rugby League and have the opportunity to develop both your skill and fitness levels then this is the course for you. You must be a committed individual willing to dedicate time to the game of Rugby League

Minimum requirements are 4 GCSE grades at D or above preferably in English, Maths and Science

What can I do next?
The progression routes from this course include:
• Further study on the second year of the course, studying a level 3 (3 A-level equivalent) qualification
• Further study at foundation degree level either at Lakes College or another Higher Education institute
• Undertaking of industry recognised qualifications in areas such as gym instruction
• Employment in the industry in a role such as a Leisure Assistant in a sports centre.
• Completion of a UK Coaching Certificate
• Accreditation to the Register of Exercise Professionals (REPs)
• Playing progression into the West Cumbria Under 18’s squad

Level 2 Football Performance Development

What’s on the Course?

FOOTBALL  SPECIFIC CONTENT
Students will receive FOOTBALL specific qualifications which include FA level 1 Coaching Qualification and potential level 2.  FA Match Officials Qualification.

Two days horticulture activities at Distington Victorian Walled Garden working toward a Level 1 certificate in a working environment.

Two days based at the College working on the core skills at an appropriate level (English, Maths and ICT) to include a tutorial session.

Who is it suitable for?
The Course is suitable for any student with an interest in horticulture working at or towards Entry 3.
Applicants with a learning difficulty or disability are fully encouraged but must also be working at or about entry Level 3.
This course is ideal for those who enjoy practical tasks while needing to improve functional classroom skills.

What are the entry requirements?
Applicants should be working at Entry 3 particularly in the practical context as other skills can be improved alongside the higher practical qualification.
Applicants should be capable of the physical demands of horticulture at this level. Those with some experience in horticulture would be given first consideration.
