Our Young Apprentices

youngapp

45 Young Apprentices from Lakes College West Cumbria were recently joined by family, friends, tutors and employers at a special celebratory ceremony, held at Hunday Manor, to receive their awards for completion of the challenging Young Apprenticeship Programme.

Staff from the college and schools and employers involved in the partnership presented the awards and a voucher of £50.00 to each of the students who have completed their Young Apprenticeships in either Performing Arts, Sports Leadership & Engineering including Performing Arts student Thomas Waite who narrowly missed out on becoming the UK’s Young Apprentice of the Year at the National Apprenticeship Service grand award ceremony in London.

The Young Apprenticeship programme has been running at Lakes College since its national launch in 2005.  Originally set up as government pilot scheme, the programme offers young individuals the opportunity to take industry specific courses alongside their GCSE studies, it proved so successful that six years later the scheme is still running but has sadly become another victim of economic cuts. In September 2011, the college welcomed the last cohort of Young Apprentice students on their two year programmes.

Judith Dakers, Lakes College School Provision Manager said

“The awards evening has been an opportunity to help these young people recognise and celebrate their success, I believe the Young Apprenticeships have given lots of young people the motivation and encouragement to really try and achieve their potential.  During the lifespan of the programme the college has built up some major partnerships with schools and local organisations to run the courses. We are currently exploring different avenues that could take the place of young apprenticeships and enable us to continue working with our partners.”

1ST Place in UK for new course

NVQ and apprenticeship course in external wall insulation.

Staff at Lakes College West Cumbria have been taking extra steps to ensure that the skills available in the area meet the demands of a £22M investment planned to give the area a domestic energy efficiency refurbishment. In November, Lakes College will be the first college in the UK to launch an NVQ and apprenticeship course in external wall insulation.

Back in September 2011, Lakes College hosted the Securing Training and Employment in the Low Carbon Economy’ conference, organised by Impact Housing Association’s ‘Greenways to Work’ Project with the support of the European Social Fund. At the Conference it was announced that £22million worth of investment would be spent in the next two years in West Cumbria alone.

£3.75M of this investment has been secured through the European Regional Development Fund by the ‘Cumbria Cohesion Partnership’. The Partnership intends to spend a total of £7.5million on developing the low carbon economy and reducing fuel bills to over 800 homes in the area.

Civil engineering and construction products experts Parex Ltd have linked up with the college to provide approximately £5000 worth of free training and equipment so the college can offer NVQ qualifications in the innovative field of externally insulated render systems which can make a dramatic impact on energy efficiency.

Lakes College Head of Faculty Graham Johnson said “We are constantly striving to offer greater opportunities for local workforces and students at the college so we are really pleased to be the 1st college in the UK to offer this new qualification. The future developments mean that there will be more opportunities for employment in the area so training for new techniques will also need to be available.”

General Manager of Parex Ltd, Steven Keitley commented: “We are currently working on homes in Maryport, to provide them with our external insulation system through the Cumbria Cohesion Partnership and are really happy to be helping Lakes College offer these skills to the communities throughout Cumbria.  The external wall insulation system is predicted to improve thermal efficiency by 20% to 30%, not only will home owners and tenants be able to save through cheaper energy bills, it will create warmer homes and assist in protecting the building from damp and therefore also reduce general maintenance costs.”

Phil Davies, Chair of the Cumbria Cohesion Partnership and the Social Enterprise Manager at Impact Housing, stressed the achievements made by the various Partners: “It really shows what can be achieved in West Cumbria when social landlords like Impact, Home and Westfield team up with such a responsive organisation as Lakes College. Together with European support and the support of private companies, this programme will not only deliver the first course of its kind in the UK, but also real jobs, and real benefits to householders. It’s great to see money well invested for local benefit.”

The External Wall Insulation programmes will start running from the end of November, for further information please contact Lakes College on 01946 839300.

Why not? Learn from home

Lakes College West Cumbria has teamed up with one of the UK’s premier home study providers, UK Open Learning, to offer distance learning to those who prefer to study from home at their own pace and in their own time.

This partnership has ensured that the college can now offer an extra 50+ courses to those who are unable to study at the Lillyhall campus.  The courses available cover a wide variety of topics from Starting up Your Own Business, Children’s and Social Studies through to Criminology, Property Development and Animal Care. Virtually all the courses are certificated by the national awarding body NCFE, thus ensuring that students have a sound learning experience.

The college’s Partnership and External Relations Manager, Clare McGuinness, said; “We are delighted to be able offer even more flexibility in our courses through our new partnership with UK Open Learning.  This opens doors to those who are restricted by commitments such as childcare or travel, or even those who would feel more comfortable studying from home in their own environment. SEN centre launch success

mathewlauch

Lakes College celebrated the recent opening of its brand new state-of-the-art 14-19 SEN centre last night (Thursday) with an all-singing, all-dancing launch event including a visit from Gavin and Stacey star, Mathew Horne.

The launch event began with a canapé reception, followed by stunning performances from Rumney Greaves School of Dance, Lakes College and West Lakes Academy’s Young Apprentices and, of course, the College’s very own performing arts students.

Students were delighted to be offered words of wisdom by Mathew after he joined them for rehearsals before the event began. One student told Mathew that they thought the college was fantastic and asked him his view, he responded; ‘well I haven’t been here very long but I would certainly agree’! Both Mathew and his guest commented that they had a ‘wonderful evening’ at the College, saying ‘we loved it’!

The launch was a real showcase of what the College’s new centre has to offer for students and the community. With more equipment being installed daily this is just the beginning as the College forges its way forward as a centre for excellence in performing arts and provision for learners with special educational needs.

You can view photos of the event HERE

Golden Apple Winners

apples

Lakes College was the biggest winner at last night’s Golden Apples awards, scooping 4 out of the 7 we were nominated for. Last year was the first year of the self-styled Oscars of Cumbrian education. Last year Lakes College won Post-16 provider of the year, beating Gen 11, and Ashley McAleavy won Outstanding New Teacher.

After such a great coup last year the college decided to go even bigger and better this year and entered Outstanding New Teacher and Post-16 Provider of the Year again, and added Lecturer of the Year, Learner of the Year, Apprentice of the Year, Teaching Assistant of the Year and Community Involvement.

Last night over 400 of the great and the good of education in Cumbria arrived at Energus with great expectations for the evening ahead. Lakes College had two tables, one as host as sponsor of Support Staff of the Year and one as a nominee.

We were presented with the Community Involvement Award for the work the college does with hard to reach groups, re-engaging and engaging the wider community. Stephanie Humphreys was nominated by us for Apprentice of the Year for her exceptional progression at Forth Engineering which she won on the night. She is a shining example of how the apprenticeship scheme can help young people secure employment and promotions in these uncertain times. Our very own Claire Shakespeare won Teaching Assistant of the Year for her dedication and skills supporting students at Lakes College. Finally, the Learner of the Year Award went to Rob Skelly, who turned his life around when he enrolled on a holistic health and wellbeing course at Lakes College.

There is obviously extensive coverage in the local papers as the event was sponsored by Cumbrian Newspapers, and with headlines from The Times and Star such as, “Lakes College is top class,” and from the Whitehaven News describing it as “another triumphant night for Lakes College,” the college is proud to be the biggest winner from the evening.

First Win Of The Rugby Season

Lakes College’s rugby team have achieved their first win of the season on Wednesday 28th September with their first fixture in the SRL North West division. It was the first chance the students on the new Elite Rugby Programme have had to play together. The students travelled to Cowley College in St Helens who they defeated with an impressive 32:12 win.

The first half was tight, with both team’s defence working hard. Lakes took an early lead with a well worked try, Connor Holliday making a break down the right side of the pitch and passing to Andrew Smith to go over the try line; Sean Mumberson converted.

Cowley came back into the game with two quick tries of their own to go 12-6 up. Lakes got over for another try just before half time with Callum Tunstall finishing well in the corner; the conversion was missed meaning Cowley were in the lead at half time 12.10.

The second half was dominated by Lakes College as they ran in four tries without reply. A training ground move saw Martin O’Neil and Andrew Smith combining to send Scott Rouke away to score. The next two tries were scored by the left sided players, Tony Quinn and Lewis McCarron combining well and both crossing for tries. The final try of the game came from an excellent break from Connor Holliday who passed to Karl Dixon who beat three players on his way to the try line. Sean Mumberson converted three out of the four tries. The final score 32.12 to Lakes College giving them their first victory of the season.

Lakes College has announced that it has been the one of the first colleges nationwide to join forces with the Carbon Trust, they have signed up to the FE Carbon Management Programme with the aim to greatly reduce its carbon footprint within the next five years.

In March 2011, the DECC (Department of Energy & Climate Change) launched its ‘5 Point Carbon Plan’ which highlights how Britain plans to take on climate change.   The document sets out the plans to build a low carbon Britain by cutting UK emissions by 34% in 2020 and over 80% by 2050 as well as maintaining secure energy supplies and maximising economic opportunities.

We intend to work hard over the coming years to support national and local agendas, and particularly Britain’s Energy Coast, in helping people become more environmentally aware and make reducing their carbon footprint a part of their everyday lives’

College Cost Less Than You Think

MONEY MATTERS

When the news broke of the end of EMA (Educational Maintenance Allowance) and discretionary transport funds, Lakes College quickly put on its thinking cap and started to come up with ideas to ensure that all learners have the opportunity to access the education they are entitled to.

Lakes College has always worked hard to ensure that its students have the financial support they need.  For some years now we have had learning support funds in place and in response to recent changes we have introduced the college bursary scheme.  The bursary scheme will offer support to students that have been affected by the EMA cuts or to those who are facing financial barriers.

LAKES COLLEGE BURSARY SCHEME

Bursaries

The bursary scheme has been created by Lakes College to help students aged 16 – 18 most in need of financial assistance; it will ensure they have the opportunity to study in further education.

The College offers students two bursaries. You will not need to nominate which one you are applying for we will work this out from your application. In addition to bursary payments you will be supported with the cost of any equipment you need to purchase for your course or any trips that are related to your learning. These costs have already been confirmed by your tutor.

The Guaranteed Bursary

This is a payment of £40 per week towards the costs of coming to College. To be eligible for this bursary you must be:

  •  In care
  •  A Care leaver
  •  In receipt of income support

(Independent student on means tested benefit in own right)

  •  Disabled and in receipt of Employment Support Allowance
  •  Disabled and in receipt of Disability Living Allowance

The College Bursary

The College Bursary is available to new 16-18 year-old full-time FE students, who would have previously been eligible for the full Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA). The Bursary is a payment of £24 a month towards the costs of coming to College.

The payment of £24 a month is equal to the cost of your monthly lunches on the days you come to College or you can choose to spend this money to help you with books and materials, or anything that you need along the way. This will ensure that you receive the financial support needed to assist you with your course.

If you have been unable to claim free transport from Cumbria County Council then we may be able to offer a payment each term to assist you with the costs of buying your own travel card. To qualify for this transport support you must live more than 3 miles from the College. The cost of saver pass from Cumbria County Council is £350 for the year

Family Banquet Success

banquet

A giant street party was held on Friday evening (29th of July) at Lakes College, with entertainment from an eclectic mix of street performers as part of the Lakes Alive 2011 Summer Programme.

Nearly 100 people attended the event which saw guests enjoying picnics in the sunshine whilst a mixture of static and walkabout acts performed around them.

Highlights of the evening included The Astral Circus which showcased not only Ric Taylor’s juggling talents but also his balancing abilities on the giant Ball of Death and tightrope walking on the dreaded Walk of Despair.

The Bread and Butter Theatre Company also thrilled guests as they performed their Sports Day act about two enthusiastic teachers trying to get the nation fit for the 2012 Olympics.

To complete the evening the Last Chance Saloon Band got the guests up on their feet to participate in a spot of line dancing with their performance of Barndance with Attitude.

The evening was a great success with the variety of entertainment getting top marks from the audience.  Guests took full advantage of the event by bringing along their friends and families, participating in acts and sharing a laugh with the performers.
